The content of my work comes from travel experiences, hence an elaborate travel log. I am fascinated by how diverse the world is and seeing it in person has changed my life. I have been to about 25 different countries therefore I have a lot of photography. I tend to process trips for years so pictures are an important tool for me. Photos provide a visual vocabulary that supply endless imagery to extract from for my work.
My process emphasizes directness and welcomes the mishaps. I use acrylic paint for this reason. It allows me to work quickly as it dries fast. It also has a matte finish that appeals to me. Though I don't always work directly on the canvas. I often glue cardboard to the substrate providing another surface for further experimentation. This obviously requires gallons of gesso! The texture can be thick and beautiful.
Another process I love creating is a watercolor monotype. Because this involves painting on an acrylic surface, all scratches, wipes and brushstrokes are revealed when printed. The print tells all! Next I might screenprint images onto my pieces to enhance the interest even more.
From one piece to the next the expression is unpredictable, and the information is diverse reflecting the world around us.
Biography
Eleanor Dickinson was born and raised in Little Rock, Arkansas. In 1995 she graduated from Sweet Briar College in Virginia with a major in Biology and a minor in Art History. Upon graduation and after much serious thought Eleanor decided to join the health field by studying to become a doctor. During this time she attended UALR to acquire the prerequisites for Medical School, she interned at a Veterinary Hospital and volunteered at UAMS emergency room. Two years later however she discovered her creative talents were being neglected, and that medical school was not in her future. Immediately following that she began working in advertising, which got her creative blood pumping again. A year later Eleanor began attending Portfolio Center in Atlanta, Georgia working towards a Master's degree in Graphic Design. Upon completion in 2002 she landed her dream job in Chicago, working as a Designer at VSA Partners, INC.
A year later she found the corporate world was not suited to her sensibilities. Without further pause, a new world was once again under way. Eleanor was accepted to the MFA program in printmaking at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. There she gave it her all and completed her degree in three years. Afterwards Eleanor moved back to Little Rock where she gave advertising two more years while making art and exhibiting in community art galleries. While it was fun to marry both advertising and fine art, something else was giving her an itch she could not ignore. She co-founded and managed retail store White Goat, a European-inspired country furniture and accessories home decor store. The endeavor proved to be an unforgettable learning experience with a roller coaster of events that made this "stuff" phase totally worthwhile.
Now, several years later, Eleanor has traveled full circle and returned to her passion in life. She is now working as a full-time artist. So far so good.
I have more fun creating art with kids.
